Expressions In The Dark

“Expressions In The Dark” is about all of the words and thoughts that are unsaid between two people when they are attracted to each other and look into each other’s eyes. So much can be said without saying anything at all.

The writing process…

I wrote this song several years ago, and never thought of releasing it to the public.  In my mind it was always too short, too simple, and no matter how many times I listened to it, I always heard something wrong with it.  I was making excuses and holding myself up to an imaginary standard that doesn’t even exist.

I recorded this song in my garage-turned-studio and immediately shared it to social media once I had some sort of mix ready.  I remember being so excited.  The response was..minimal.  I got in my head about the song and wrote it off – never to be played or worked on again.

Over the years, the song kept popping up in my head. Sometimes when I’d warmup saxophone, I’d find myself playing the opening lines of “Expressions In The Dark.”  When I’d be browsing lists of songs I needed to work on, it always showed up in the file explorer.

The percussion was arranged and performed by myself digitally, and the acoustic guitar was performed and recorded by me using my roommate’s Martin acoustic guitar.  I miss that guitar so much.

In so many ways, the release of this song is a testament to perseverance, determination, and silencing doubt in my mind.  It’s a good song and it should be shared with the world, not discarded.

Song lyrics.

You may not know this, but most of my saxophone songs actually have lyrics that I am sort of..singing in my head as I play.  This gives me the liberty to play whatever I want on the saxophone without being restricted by rhyme schemes or syllable counts.  With that being said, although this song is technically an instrumental, there are in fact lyrics.
