The Island, Pt. 1 (Dawn)

"The Island, Pt. 1 (Dawn)" is actually a cover of a song by Pendulum that was released back in 2010. The original is a total EDM banger that always gets me hype and puts me in the best mood. One day I came up with this crazy idea of doing acoustic versions of EDM songs just to hear how they'd sound.

The writing process…

I came home, picked up my guitar, and started jamming along to "The Island." I had so much fun just learning the chords, and then I realized that I could sing along in the original key quite comfortably...

Over the course of the next few days, I toyed with how I wanted to actually play the chords to make my cover unique from the 4/4 beat of the original house tune. Should I play it slow? Should I reggae it? Should I strum the chords out? So many options. I landed on something...poppy but also reggaeish? I don't know. I think it works.

I initially intended to send this song to my drummer to have him lay something down on it, but I got so carried away with designing the sample beat that it just ended up being the actual beat. I reminisced on my high school days, making beats on the desks with our hands. I wanted something that had a similar feel. There are very few repeating kick drum patterns and I like it that way :D

Once vocals, guitar, sax, and drums were done, I KNEW who to send it to. My man Zak Ferrell. We are bandmates in AKITA and he is the funkiest guy on planet Earth. I knew that he would be able to create something that makes this track bounce. And he DELIVERED!!! He admitted that it wasn't in his usual style of play, but he had been toying with the idea of playing "less notes" during his practice regiment, and I couldn't be happier with what he produced.

All in all, this might be tmi, but I had so much freakin fun making this. I hope you guys enjoy! This song is available on all streaming platforms.

My next song of 2024 drops on Valentine's Day and it is an alto sax sexy sexy sexy sexy tune called "Expressions In The Dark."

I love you all!
